COOKEVILLE – Senior linebacker Taylor Wood and three coaches from White House High School have been named to the 2013 Tennessee Athletic Coaches Association Toyota East-West All-Star Classic.
Wood, who leads the Blue Devils with 123 tackles this season and is just 23 tackles short of the career tackling record at White House, will play for the West squad in the game hosted by Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville. Kickoff is Dec. 13, at 7 p.m. CST. The game is the week after the TSSAA high school football state championships.
The West team will be coached by White House head coach Jeff Porter. He will be joined by assistant Jim Grantham of White House as offensive coordinator and assistant coach Ryan Hamilton to coach offensive backs. Full rosters will be released soon.
Jerry Joslin, the head coach of Pope John Paul II, will serve as the defensive coordinator, with former Tennessee Titans wideout and Montgomery Bell Academy assistant Chris Sanders coaching receivers.
The remainder of the coaching staff includes Trey Perry of Mt. Juliet and Brandon Gray of Adamsville coaching defensive backs, and Rodney Saulsberry of Memphis Whitehaven coaching the defensive line. Porter and Joslin will coach linebackers.
The players are selected through a nomination process by TACA head coaches and will be divided into an East/West roster.
The game was held in Cookeville last year after five seasons in Jefferson City. The series is tied, 3-3, with the East winning last year’s game, 41-20. Coach Porter was an assistant coach for the West in last year’s game.
The game features some of the best talent in the state of Tennessee assembled on one field, and past Most Valuable Player awards have been given to Alcoa’s Randall Cobb of the Green Bay Packers and the University of Kentucky, and current Vanderbilt defensive end Caleb Azubike of McGavock High School. Former Tennessee Vols defensive back Marsalis Teague of Henry County also won the award.
Though Porter was an assistant coach, White House did not have a player in 2012 on the roster, but has sent several Blue Devils to the game in the past.
