Tennessean: Giles Co, Pearl game marred by 29 penalties

A stubborn defense and a sea of penalties brought Pearl-Cohn’s season to a premature end. The Firebirds were hoping for a deep run in Class 4A, but visiting Giles County beat Pearl-Cohn 23-7 in the second round on Friday night. Pearl-Cohn (10-2), ranked fifth in 4A, was averaging 43.7 points in its previous seven games, but couldn’t get anything going against No. 7 Giles County (10-2).

The Firebirds were penalized 20 times for 190 yards, and the Bobcats were penalized nine times for 85 yards. “The kids fought hard all the way through the game, but I’m sorry, you can’t beat (Giles County) and the referees,” Pearl-Cohn coach Tony Brunetti said. “Every run we had was a flag. They’re going to call what they see, but I’ve never seen so many flags in my life.”…READ MORE
