RC Times: Blue Devils top Greenbrier

By Chris Lynn for The Robertson County Times

The White House High football team is known for its physical running style on offense.

The visiting Blue Devils also showed they had plenty of finesse in the passing game on Friday night, and Greenbrier’s defense didn’t have an answer in a 32-18, Blue Devil win.

“We weren’t able to stop (Greenbrier) all night until we got in the final minutes of the fourth quarter,” White House head coach Jeff Porter said. “They shut down our running game, but we knew that’s what they were going to try and do. Fortunately, we were able to get a few over them in the passing game, and that was the difference tonight.

“I know people are going to look at the score and think we had our way with them tonight, but the score doesn’t reflect the type of game it was. I was proud of our guys for hanging in there and making plays, because this was another tough Greenbrier/White House game.”

Ronald Honeycutt led the way for White House, rushing for 91 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown, and Josh Mullins had two receptions for 154 yards and two scores.

“This was a big win for us because it’s such a huge rivalry, and it’s also a big district game,” Mullins said. “Any time we play Greenbrier, you know it’s going to be a hard-hitting game, and tonight was no different. We just got a couple of big plays late and got the win, but it didn’t look good early.”

Points were at a premium early as Greenbrier put up the only score of the first quarter on Christian Warren’s 27-yard field goal.

White House junior Logan Trimmer tied the game in the second quarter with a 36-yard field goal with 1:29 left before halftime.

Greenbrier (0-3 overall, 0-1 in 9-AA) was able to take the lead with no time left on the clock when Warren hit his second field goal of the night, from 21 yards away to give the Bobcats the 6-3 advantage.

White House (2-0, 1-0) didn’t waste any time getting on the board in the second half as junior quarterback Steven Rankin hit a streaking Mullins on a 70-yard touchdown completion to give the Blue Devils their first lead, 10-6.

Greenbrier answered on the ensuing drive when Hayden Broyles went off tackle and broke through two sets of defenders for a 41-yard touchdown, but James Whitby blocked the extra point to leave the score at 12-10 with 8:06 left in the third quarter.

White House only needed two plays to again take the lead when Rankin hooked up again with Mullins on a drag route across the middle of the field for an 84-yard touchdown to make it 18-12 with just over a minute left in the third.

Greenbrier answered with a 15-play, 80-yard scoring drive that took up almost eight minutes, topped off by the 7-yard score by Paul Gonser to tie the game 18-18 after the missed extra point.

White House went back to work in the air as Rankin completed passes to two different rexceivers before Troy Raymond took it off tackle and went untouched 35 yards to paydirt to put the Blue Devils up 25-18.

The Bobcats were held to a three and out and then shanked the punt, giving White House the short field.

Honeycutt took advantage of the good field position, running into the end zone from 29 yards out and winding his way through the Greenbrier defense for the touchdown on the first play of the drive.

“I’m proud of my guys, because they played hard and gave it all they had,” said Greenbrier head coach Kirk Williams. “We just gave up a couple of big plays, and that’s something we talked about right before the game. We told them that we can’t go to sleep for even one play, because White House has that kind of offense. Hats off to them tonight. They’ve got a good team that’s well coached, but you wouldn’t expect anything else from White House.”

White House will host Lipscomb Academy on Friday. Greenbrier will travel to Portland.
