(CROSS PLAINS) – The Blue Devils threw a definitive first punch and a TKO blow Friday night in the Robertson County Jamboree, slugging Cheatham County, 14-0 in exhibition play.
White House rushed 17 times for 192 yards and five first downs in two quarters of action, scoring on the second play from scrimmage and then grinding out a long touchdown drive in 24 minutes of action.
“The most important thing is getting under the lights and coming out of the game healthy,” said White House head coach Jeff Porter after the game. “We will find out a little more when we get back to the field house but that’s the most important thing.”
When Cameron Casanova and Eddy Walker stopped Walker Bunce for no gain on 3rd-and-2 on the opening series, the Cubs were called for holding and White House took the penalty. Quarterback Landon Barnes scrambled for 15 yards but needed 16 and Cheatham punted, backing up White House inside the 8-yard-line.
Carter Hunt rushed for six yards on the first play and then bolted outside the 20-yard-line where he was tripped up by Jorden Hoffman – except Hunt wasn’t down. He took the rush 86 yards to pay dirt and White House led 7-0 with 8:14 left in the first quarter. Jacob Harper added the PAT, his first of two on the night.
Hunt added a 23-yard run on the second series and finished the game with three carries for 115 yards and a score. But White House wasn’t done grinding the football, as Wil Blackburn scored from 10 yards out to cap an eight-play drive for 46 yards in the second quarter. It was Wil’s only carry, but Landon Deming was the workhorse on the series with five rushes for 43 yards to push the ball to 1st-and-goal.
Trevor Ivanits carried twice for 11 and Will Frazier four times for 13. The Blue Devils only threw once, and it was incomplete, finishing the game with 192 yards all from the backfield.
Cheatham County was led by Barnes with six runs for 43 yards and held under triple digits with 93 yards for the game.
White House picked up defensive stopes from 23 different players, led by Tyler McMurtry with five, Tyler Ridings, Eddy Walker and Josh Strother with four, and Colby Taylor and Will Frazier with three each.
“Next week is a big game and we are looking forward to seeing everyone come out,” Porter said. “We have an opportunity to evaluate what we saw tonight, get back to the practice field on Monday and prepare for a very important game next Friday.”
White House opens the 2017 regular season officially at home next Friday against East Robertson, coached by former Blue Devil player and assistant coach Chad Broadrick. The Indians have not played White House in 31 years and the Blue Devils hold a 23-5-3 mark all-time against ERHS.
