GALLATIN – There were no long-term surprises in the Sumner County Middle School Basketball Tournament held over two weeks at Shafer Middle School because of the weather conditions, with top seeds winning the boys and girls sides of the bracket.

Undefeated Hunter Middle School completed the season sweep at 17-0 with a 41-32 victory over Ellis in the championship of the girls tournament. Hunter, a long-time powerhouse in basketball in Sumner County, outscored its opponents 127-60 in the three games.

Hunter won the girls championship for the 10th time since 1995 and third straight. Ellis had won six straight from 2008-14. White House has never won the girls tournament, but has finished as the runner-up twice.

The White House Lady Devils, who were 28-23 winners in the quarterfinals over Knox Doss at Drakes Creek, lost to the Lady Bucs in the semifinals for the second year in a row. Hunter won, 41-13, to end the White House Lady Devils season. White House finished fifth in the conference standings but defeated fourth seed Knox Doss twice in the final week, once in the regular season and then again in the tournament rematch. White House ended the year, 8-8 overall.

Knox Doss steamrolled its way to the boys tournament championship at 16-1 overall, but the tournament was not without a fight. Knox Doss knocked off Portland West, 71-20, then Shafer, 44-31, before a 43-37 win over Station Camp in the final.

This was Knox Doss’ seventh championship since 1995. White House has won the tournament only once in boys play (2015). White House has three runner-up finishes overall.

Portland West, the nine seed, gave the White House Blue Devils a disappointing end to the season in the day one play-in round to see who would play Knox Doss. White House lost. 46-43, and ended the year, 4-11.
