HARTSVILLE — Junior Don Dunning scored on a short wedge play up the middle with 1:23 left in regulation as Friendship Christian School pulled off a 10-7 win over Class 1A power Trousdale County High Friday, Aug. 21 at John Kerr Field.
Neil Kane’s 32-yard field goal with 3:29 remaining in the second quarter broke open a scoreless game and gave the Commanders a 3-0 lead at intermission.
Trousdale County threatened later in the quarter, but ‘Jacket back Cameron Rankins pulled up lame with a hamstring injury on the FCS 10-yard line.
Rankins, who had 120 yards on 10 carries, never came back in the game as TCHS missed a chip shot field goal attempt to close out the period.
Early in the third quarter Trousdale County managed a 28-yard scoring run by Bryson Claiborne.
With a PAT from Heath Chasse, the ‘Jackets pulled ahead 7-3 with 9:47 left in the period.
Dunning’s late score sealed the win for the Commanders, who went to a two tight end set in the second half to provide better blocking at the point of attack. “We had planned to throw the ball around a little more,” Coach McNeal said, “and we completed a couple of throws for first downs. We hadn’t run any two-tight in the preseason, but it worked out well.
“With the weather being like it was and us not having any scrimmages and nothing to prepare for, I was really pleased with the way we played. “We didn’t turn it over and that was probably the key.”
Senior Drew Porter bounced back and forth from quarterback to receiver with equal success. He ran seven times for 66 yards, completed 1-of-3 pass attempts for 12 yards and caught two passes from Kolby Gaines for 22 yards.
Gaines attempted seven passes, with both completions going to Porter.
Sophomore Delanie Majors ran seven times for 47 yards and caught a pass for 12 yards. Dunning earned 38 yards on 13 tries and scored a touchdown.
Senior linebacker Trey Owen was all over the field for Friendship Christian, taking part in 18 tackles.
Jack Martin was close behind, having been credited with 14 stops — including three tackles for loss. Daniel Graves was in on eight tackles and recovered a Trousdale County fumble.
