WHITE HOUSE – The Portland Panthers cruised to a three-set win in the opening match of the District 11-AA Volleyball Tournament semifinals Thursday at White House High School, defeating fourth-seeded Springfield.
The defending district and region champions and three-time consecutive state finalist dominated the closing set to put away the Yellow Jackets, but not before a furious rally by Springfield in the second set. The Jackets held off at least three set points and closed to 25-20, but lost the first set 25-16 and the last 25-10.
Portland advanced to the championship match against the winner of White House Heritage and Macon County which is currently being played at the time of this article.
Springfield senior Morgan Gunn and junior Josie Buck were named to the All-District 11-AA Team.
Springfield defeated Greenbrier in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
