White House sophomore Tyler Hammond qualified for his second consecutive state tournament on Saturday, finishing fourth in the 138-pound weight class at the Region 4A-AA Wrestling Meet.
Hammond lost his opening round match to Nick Payne of Greenbrier in 4:41 by pin fall, but bounced back to defeat Ethan Steele of Cheatham County in 28 seconds and then clinch the spot in the state tournament with a 2:40 pin fall over Matthew Cox of Fairview. He then lost again in the seeding match for third to Payne.
Hammond finished the day 2-2 and is 13-6 overall for the season.
Hammond will return to the state tournament in a higher weight class after making it last season as a freshman in the 120-pound class.
It was a successful day for the Blue Devils overall, but Hammond was the only qualifier in a tough wrestling season that has been slowed at times by COVID-19 protocols across the state.
White House overall was 10-12 in matches for the day as a team including forfeitures. Full results are below.
Haden Cooper (sophomore) defeated London Abernathy in 1:35 by pin fall in the 120-pound class, then lost in the semifinals to Payton Boyde of Harpeth in 3:25 and in the consolation semifinals to Cole Stevens of Millington Central in 3:14.
Cooper was 1-2 overall on the day and 7-5 overall for the season.
Cade Hutcherson (sophomore) defeated Michael Sisco of Creek Wood in a 7-3 decision in the 126-pound quarterfinals, but fell to Dylan Davenport of Sycamore in 5:42 in the semifinals and then to Owen Carney of Cheatham County in the consolation semifinals in 1:07.
Hutcherson was 1-2 overall on the day and 15-3 for the season.
Tony Jeffrey (sophomore) did not compete today but was 11-2 for the season after suffering an injury.
Tyler Hammond (sophomore) lost to Nick Payne of Greenbrier in the quarterfinals in 4:41, then defeated Ethan Steele of Cheatham County in 0:28 in the consolation round one and then defeated Matthew Cox of Fairview in 2:40 in the consolation semifinals. He then had to compete against Payne in the third place match and lost in 49 seconds. The last match was a seeding match.
Hammond was 2-2 overall and finished in a qualifying position of fourth place. He is 13-6 for the season.
Bobby Schultz (freshman) received a bye in the quarterfinals and then lost to Lucas Taylor of White House Heritage in 19 seconds in the semifinals. He received a bye in the consolation round two, then defeated Nate Williams of Harpeth in 1:29 in consolation round three. He lost to Dalen Kimble of Sycamore in 23 seconds in the consolation semifinals.
Schultz was 3-2 overall for the day and 7-9 for the season.
Chase Johnson (junior) did not compete today but was 0-1 for the season in the same weight class after suffering an injury.
Bralen Crouch received a bye in round one and the quarterfinals, but lost in the semifinals to Elliot Counasse of Greenbrier in 5:33. He then lost to Xavier Whitlow of Hume-Fogg in the consolation semifinals in 3:16.
Crouch was 2-2 overall.
Joshua Underwood (freshman) lost to Timmy Kern of Cheatham County in 1:37 in round one, then received a bye in consolation round one and lost to Ethan White of Greenbrier in 3:23 in consolation round two.
Underwood was 1-2 on the day and 4-13 overall for the season.
Leander Copeland (sophomore) did not compete on the day in the 182-pound class but was 2-9 for the season after suffering an injury.
