PLEASANT VIEW – The White House Lady Devils took a while to get started offensively Monday night, but finished off Sycamore with a 7-0 victory on the road.
Despite being shut out for the first six innings of the game in a pitcher’s duel, White House jumped on the board in the the final frame and exploded for a seven-spot. That was enough for freshman starter LeighAnn Sanders, who came back to end the game in the seventh with just three hits scattered across the night with six strikeouts in the complete game.
White House enters Tuesday’s game at home with Heritage at 3-3 in District 9-AA, but every team in the district has at least one loss and the field is wide open heading into the back half of the season. White House is 8-10 overall.
In the seventh, the Lady Devils got a lead off walk from senior Kaylee Rogers, then a single by senior Kate Tobin skipped off the foot of the third baseman before walks were issued to Sanders, Miranda Cain and a hit by pitch to Harris. Cain’s walk brought in the first run.
After Harris was plunked, junior Chloe Hart came within a few feet of making it 6-0 with a grand slam, with a loud fly out to left at the warning track. The sac fly scored Kayden Albin, running for Sanders, to make it 3-0.
Junior Elena Jones smacked an RBI single to score Cain, then Harris scored on a passed ball for a 5-0 lead. After a fly out, freshman Brook McCray got an RBI single to drive home Jones with two outs, and then Rogers singled down the third base line and Tobin laced a single past third behind the bag for an RBI and the 7-0 tally.
White House was flawless defensively except for one slight overthrow at first base in the final inning, trying to cut down the runner on a single to right.
Tobin was 2-4 with a sac bunt and an RBI, and Cain drew two walks with Sanders picking up a single. Harris was 2-3 with an RBI and a HBP, and Jones reached three times with an error, walk and a base hit for an RBI. Matti Ellis picked up two infield singles on tough plays for the War Eagles at short and third, and McCray and Rogers both had a base hit with McCray driving one in.
Gabby Crousser got the defensive start as a flex in left field and Albin scored a run as a courtesy runner.
White House has a rematch with Heritage Tuesday after handing the Lady Patriots their only district loss, 7-5.
