Clinger Picks Devils to beat Cheatham

By Joel Clinger for The Robertson County Connection

I went 3-1 last week in my picks, as Jo Byrns just could not hold on to their halftime lead.

This is the first week of region matchups, as every team except White House Heritage will face their first region opponent. Springfield, Greenbrier and White House all seem to have favorable matchups Friday against new region opponents. Jo Byrns will have a favorable matchup as well against a familiar opponent.

It should be a very positive week for most of the area teams. Fingers crossed, no game is canceled. Stay safe everyone.

Here are my picks for Week 3 of the 2021 season:

My Record: 7-2

Springfield at Northeast

Springfield has looked impressive through two weeks. The Yellow Jackets have picked up two wins by wide margins in the first two weeks.

They are now playing in 5A, and this week will be their first region opponent in the new classification. Last week’s game against Clarksville seems to be a good predictor of their success against the Montgomery County opponents in their region.

Northeast scored over 60 points in their opener against West Creek but was shut out against Montgomery Central last week. It could be an inconsistent team, but if Springfield plays how they can, they should have no problem with the Eagles.

Pick: Springfield 34, Northeast 7

Glencliff at Greenbrier

Greenbrier has had a rough, 0-2 start. The good news is that neither of those losses were in Region 5-4A.

The Bobcats will host their first region opponent, Glencliff, this week. The Colts have also dropped their first two games to Cheatham County and Whites Creek, but they have done so by a combined 98 points.

This is exactly what Greenbrier needed, and they should get their first win of the season.

Pick: Greenbrier 40, Glencliff 0

Franklin-Simpson (Ky.) at WH Heritage

White House Heritage is coming off a nice win over East Robertson last week. The Patriots scored 19 unanswered points to shut the door. They had three rushers over 80 yards for the second consecutive week.

Head coach Stetson Dickerson said his team is still trying to figure out who they are. If they can do that while stacking wins, that’s a pretty great start to the season. This is the second game against a Kentucky school this year, and they’ll be looking for their second win.

Pick: WH Heritage 33, Franklin-Simpson (Ky.) 20

Cheatham County at White House

The Blue Devils bounced back from their Week 1 loss to defeat Greenbrier last week. Their woes may have been due to some missing players that should come back soon.

Cheatham County is coming off of a loss to Harpeth in Week 2, a team that Jo Byrns defeated. The Cubs did put a number on Glencliff in the first week of the season, but White House should have no problem with the Cubs if everyone is healthy.

Ranen Blackburn will be the best player on the field, and the Blue Devils should pick up their first region win.

Pick: White House 34, Cheatham County 6

Trousdale County at East Robertson

The Indians are 0-2, but their biggest loss may be due to injury. Taylor Groves left the game against Heritage with a shoulder injury. It could be minor, but after dealing with injuries last season, this cannot be what the team wanted to see.

Heritage outscored East Robertson 19-0 after his departure. Trousdale County is the Indians’ first region opponent and have been perennial powerhouses along with Watertown in that region.

ERHS head coach Atlee Pond said they wanted to face solid teams up to this point because they need to prepare for matchups like this. A fully healthy Indians team could give Trousdale County all it can handle.

There is a lot of unknown, but Trousdale County is a mountain of a matchup for anyone in 2A.

Pick: Trousdale County 34, East Robertson 12

Red Boiling Springs at Jo Byrns

Jo Byrns fell to McEwen last week despite holding a 20-8 lead at halftime. McEwen is a solid 1A program.

The Red Devils will face their first Region 4-1A opponent this week as it welcomes Red Boiling Springs. Jo Byrns won last season’s matchup 42-6 and should do it again.

Pick: Jo Byrns 42, Red Boiling Springs 0
