WHITE HOUSE – The 2021-22 White House High School Teacher of the Year is Lucas Hilliard.
Hilliard, an alum of White House, is a graduate of Vanderbilt University, and is in his third year teaching at WHHS and Sumner County Schools. He teaches English II, AP Seminar and AP Language. Last spring, he completed his MaEd at Union University.
Hilliard was recognized in front of his peers at a faculty meeting on Monday.
“Mr. Hilliard has been an amazing addition to our staff,” said White House High School principal Ann Miller. “The work that he has done has made such a positive impact for our students and we are proud to have him as a part of our Blue Devil family.”
In addition to the academic success in the classroom, Hilliard is a popular teacher with the student body and regularly participates in school activities, including running the spirit flag during pep rallies to fire up the student body cheers.
Mathew Miller had Mr. Hilliard as a teacher his junior year.
“Mr. Hilliard is one of the most well-rounded teachers I have ever had,” said White House senior Mathew Miller. “His strengths are learning the individual needs of students and making sure that each student has an environment for learning that suits their needs. He is a teacher that cares about us and you can see that immediately when you interact with him.”
Kerra Marsh also was in the same same class with Miller in 2020-21.
“Mr. Hilliard is one of the nicest people you will ever meet,” Marsh said. “Overall, he’s one of the best teachers I have ever had.”
Braeden Grieb is planning to attend college and has applied at places like Vanderbilt University. Though he has not had Mr. Hilliard as a teacher, he still credits him with tremendous influence on his success.
“Mr. Hilliard has helped me as much as any other teacher, even though I have never been in his class,” Grieb said. “He went out of his way to help me with the college admission essay process and he didn’t have to do that for me.”
Maggie Kelly plans to become a high school teacher and was inspired by people like Mr. Hilliard.
“Mr. Hilliard has always been a big inspiration for me,” she said. “I had him twice across my sophomore and junior year and he really pushed me to be my best and show me how to work hard.”
The last three teachers of the year include Hilliard, Pam Hodge and Bethni Tucker from White House High School.
Congratulations to Mr. Hilliard on his tremendous honor and representation as the teacher of the year for White House High School in 2021-22.
